Repeat offender on attempted murder charge gets one-year jail sentence

REPEAT Offender, Charles Goodluck, of Betsy Ground, East Canje, who was charged with attempted murder, was subsequently convicted for wounding following advice from the Director of Public Prosecution.

Consequently, he was sentenced to twelve months imprisonment after he was found guilty, following a trial before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo in the New Amsterdam Court.

Goodluck, aged 61 years, had inflicted a stab wound to the right side face of fifty-seven-year-old Maureen Joseph, with whom he previously shared a relationship.
According to Police Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, Goodluck, who has had several brushes of similar nature with the law, had commenced a relationship with the victim. They were together for five months.

The relationship had terminated after Joseph alleged that Goodluck was abusive.
On May 8, 2010, Joseph was on duty as a guard at the St Aloysius Primary School in Fort Canje, Berbice, where Goodluck visited, and requested a second chance to reconcile.

After being denied an opportunity to rekindle their relationship, he left her presence.
But, when the victim was relieved from her 3 pm to 11 pm duty, and was exiting through the school gate, Goodluck held unto her neck saying: “If I can’t get you, then no man can’t, before removing a knife from his waist and inflicting a wound to her face.”
However, whilst attempting to inflict another injury, the lights from an approaching vehicle alerted its driver to the altercation. As a result, the motorist intervened, rescuing the screaming woman who was taken to and treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital as Goodluck fled from the scene. He was subsequently arrested and charged.
