GPL sheds light on newspaper article about load-shedding

THE Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) is not too pleased with an article published last Friday in the Guyana Times newspaper under the caption: ‘GPL Struggles with Overhead Fuel Costs – Dindyal’.

GPL, in a statement from its acting Public Relations Officer Ms. Shevion Sears-Murray, said the newspaper should have contacted the company before publishing the article, which suggests that the company failed to provide reasons for the recent power outages.

Sears-Murray said this is especially in light of the fact that GPL had issued an earlier advisory outlining reasons for the current load- shedding being experienced and which appeared in the other newspapers and electronic media.

“The GPL Inc. wishes to categorically state that, in contrast to the (Guyana Times) article suggesting that the Company failed to provide reasons for the recent power outages, GPL in a press release dated April 6, 2011 and published in the Stabroek News dated April 6, 2011; Chronicle April 6, 2011; and Kaieteur News April 6, 2011 outlined reasons for the current load-shedding being experienced,” she pointed out in the statement.

She noted that a press release along with a load-shedding guide was also published/aired on NCN Channel 11 Television, NCN Radio VOG 560AM and 98.1 Hot FM and CNS Channel 6 over the period April 6, 2011 to April 16, 2011.

GPL said it has also provided, on a daily basis, load-shedding guides to the Guyana Chronicle, NCN (Radio and television) and CNS Channel 6 for publication.

“We would have expected the Guyana Times to contact GPL before writing the article,” GPL said, adding that it wishes to maintain its cordial communication with that newspaper.

In  a separate release, GPL said consumers should be aware that network maintenance will continue apace as preparations have to be completed for the approaching May-June rains. The network maintenance schedule was published in yesterday’s edition of the Chronicle.
