– two offices affected
THE Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), in an effort to facilitate the increase in activities resulting from the April 30, 2011 deadline for the submission of Income, Property and Corporation Tax Returns, has temporarily halted the sale of Motor Vehicle Licences (MVL) at two of its offices. From April 13 to May 2, 2011, the GRA Tax Operations and Services offices located at the Guyana Post Office (GPO) and Value Added Tax (VAT) buildings will suspend the sale of Motor Vehicle Licences to facilitate the submission of Tax Returns and the payment of taxes where applicable.
According to Commissioner-General, Mr. Khurshid Sattaur, “this action was necessary to ensure that there is a smooth process for taxpayers, including those who are not owners of motor vehicles, to honour their obligations towards Income, Property and Corporation Taxes.”
This is the second year that the GRA has expanded the sale of MVL to other locations other than LRO in an effort to make the process more convenient for persons wishing to obtain same.
However, the Commissioner-General noted that “whilst the GRA regrets any inconvenience this suspension may cause, MVL will continue to be on sale at the LRO and country wide.”
The GRA, in a statement, noted that it has established a number of Tax Sites across the country allowing tax payers the convenience of obtaining their MVL from a location nearest to their homes.
It said this is another initiative that will provide taxpayers with an efficient and simplified method of submitting their Tax Returns. In addition to the collection of returns, staff at these temporary sites will be providing assistance on computing and completing the various returns. A number of informational booklets are also available for free distribution to the public.
In Georgetown, Tax Sites have been established at the GPO Building (North Road Entrance), Customs and Trade Administration Lobby, City Mall and N&S Mattai, and will provide service until April 29, 2011. The general public is advised to check the daily newspapers or GRA’s website www.gra.gov.gy for the location of a tax site in their area.
The sale of MVL at the VAT and GPO buildings is expected to resume on May 3, 2011.
