Gov’t moves to have PUC control minibus fares

THE government is moving to have the Public Utilities Commission control minibus fares. At 10:00hrs today, members of the Minibus Association are scheduled to meet with President Bharrat Jagdeo at State House to discuss the matter.
The Guyana Chronicle understands that this is a result of a recent standoff between some minibus operators who are intent on increasing the fares, and the government, who is saying that fares will be reviewed only after the gasoline price reaches $1000 per gallon.
Operators of Route 42 buses had pulled their buses off the road last week, and Transport Minister Robeson Benn had put some 30 buses on the route, transporting commuters free of charge.
