– NBTS Coordinator
THE National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) is appealing for voluntary donors to assist in meeting the requirements of patients in need, following the start, last Friday, of open heart surgeries at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
NBTS Coordinator Shameeza Mangal told the Guyana Chronicle similar surgical operations are ongoing and, as no blood drives are planned for this week, the banks are dependent on walk-in donors.
“We need the number of individual walk-ins to increase or even if we have group donations, it would service the needs we have,” she said, inviting volunteers between 08:00 h and 18:00 h.
The Blood Bank has a target of 10,000 units this year, which aims at collections from each of the banks in the different regions must be approximately 800 units.
Volunteer givers are welcomed at all five sites nationwide, the NBTS headquarters in Georgetown, West Demerara Regional, New Amsterdam, Suddie and Linden hospitals.
Persons can also get further information by calling telephone number 227-0418.
