DIGICEL Guyana commissioned another cellular site in Ituni, the watershed village between Demerara and Berbice Rivers in Region Ten (Upper Demerara/ UpperBerbice), last Saturday.
Among those present at the ceremony, were Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Robert Persaud; Regional Chairman, Mr. Mortimer Mingo and Digicel Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Gregory Dean.
Persaud said with the commissioning, Ituni has indeed become a platform for development in the area.
He observed that Digicel has been expanding through the linking of communities especially those in far-flung areas, with cutting edge service and said Government is satisfied with that kind of development and progress.
Persaud said, with liberalisation of the telecommunications market locally, it is considered a catalyst for development and investment in which job creation is also generated.
He also spoke of the Government thrust to connect communities through modern technology, with the linking of fibre optic cables and the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) project that will be accelerated in Ituni.
Persaud said, with investment comes development and healthy competition with liberalisation of the mobile service, in which Government is committed to providing quality service for its people.
Dean said, with the inauguration of the Ituni cellular site, a link to several other locations, including Lethem and in three months time, others, among them Mabura Hill.
He reiterated that Digicel is committed to providing a reliable service to Guyanese and thanked the Ituni residents for allowing the company into their community.
Mingo lauded the efforts of Digicel to link that community in its cellular service and said it is evidence of development.
He said the small farming and logging community of Ituni welcomes such service as provided by Digicel.
After the official function, Minister Persaud and Chairman Mingo, accompanied by Dean, toured the facility.
People in attendance, many of whom took the opportunity to purchase cellular phones from a promotion booth that was placed there for the purpose of the occasion, expressed pleasure at the development.
The programme also included a cultural presentation by students of Howell Wilson Community High School who received sports gear, DVD players and sewing machines, like the Ituni Women in Action group.
Digicel Technical Director, Mr. Ryan Sinclair assisted with the distribution.
