… 10 city teams invited
IN the wake of continuous calls for more to be provided for youth football in the country, the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) is teaming up with Lens Craft Opticals and Sunburst Orange Juice to stage an Invitational 10-team League. At a Media launch held at the Continental Group of Companies yesterday, it was disclosed by the Tournament’s Chief Organiser, Frankie Wilson that a lot of emphasis will be placed on Players’ Discipline and getting the parents of players involved in attending games which will be played at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground on Saturdays.
Representatives from Lens Craft Opticals and Sunburst Juices expressed delight and pleasure in sponsoring the League and also stated their respective business will continue to be a part of any project that is geared to provide developmental opportunities for youths.
PRO Andre Kellman spoke on behalf of Lens Craft and Company Secretary of Continental Group of Companies, Percival Boyce, represented Sunburst Juices.
Vice-president of the GFA, Ivor Thompson, in his remarks noted that the League was a Pilot project and the first competition for the newly elected executive of the GFA. He made a special appeal to parents to come out and support the young footballers at the games.
Wilson revealed that the genesis of the tournament came out of the idea of former Pele player Alistair Parris, who is the CEO for Lens Craft and who is totally committed to the development of bodies and minds of young people.
Wilson added that the blessings of the GFA to stage such a tournament must be commended. He also thanked the sponsors and the media while stressing the importance of coverage.
The twelve teams invited to participate are: Pele, Camptown, Fruta Conquerors, Santos, BK International Western Tigers, Georgetown Football Club, Riddim Squad, Renaissance, Flamingo and Houston Stars.
According to Wilson ‘close to half a million dollars will be spent on the successful staging of the League, inclusive of juices and snacks for the teams during the competition, which is set to kick off next Saturday.
