COUNCILLORS of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), after an intense debate at the statutory meeting on Monday, voted to recommend current Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mr. Royston King to be appointed the new Town Clerk. But the recommendation must be approved by the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Kellawan Lall, before the nominee can succeed to the post.
Meanwhile, Ms.Yonette Pluck remains Acting Town Clerk.
The position of Town Clerk and City Treasurer were advertised both internally and externally, with several persons applying for the former and one for the latter.
The four applicants, who were interviewed for the Town Clerk’s post were King, Mr. John Bishop, Mr. Ron Eastman and Ms. Carol Sooba.
Several of the councilors at the Monday forum attested that the process was transparent, in keeping with the role of the Statutory Committee.
Councillor Ranwell Jordan assured that it was fair and said King is well qualified and his extensive experience, over the years, has equipped him to carry out the duties.
Jordan said, at this juncture, he hopes the procedure is expedited so that King can assume his new position.
Councillor Junior Garrett confirmed that, based on the scores obtained during the interviews, the Committee has chosen the most suitable person.
He agreed King is suitably qualified, having a Degree in Communication and 20 years experience serving the Municipality.
All of the applicants for the two positions were invited to be interviewed but, on the morning of the exercise, the person who applied for the post of City Treasurer declined to attend.
Consequently, the position was not dealt with and Mr. Andrew Meredith will continue functioning in that capacity. (Chevon Singh)
