… Dates yet to be announced
THIS year’s Inter-Guiana Games is on, and the first of the two-part competition between Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, will be held in the capital of the former Dutch colony.
According to the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) Administrative Officer Gervy Harry, a date for the event is not yet confirmed, since its previous proposed dates after review showed that it would have clashed with this year’s Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examinations. The three countries will compete in the disciplines of football, athletics (track and field) and swimming, with each having both male and female participation.
“We are waiting on word from the other two countries, so I don’t want to say too much at this time but it’s certainly on,” Harry said when contacted by Chronicle Sport yesterday as it relates to the staging of the event.
He stated, “Systems are already in place, but it’s just this one little problem we have, but this year, like I said, the first leg is in Suriname then later on in the year, the other will be held in French Guiana.”
Guyana lost its stronghold on the track and field event last year when the first leg was held in French Guiana, where the Dutch dominated the event.
Suriname and Guyana are bitter rivals at the games, especially in the male athletics and football departments, while the French and the Dutch would tussle back and forth in the pool.
At last year’s games, Guyana failed to send a female team to the hosting of the first leg in French Guiana citing the high cost factor for the travel overland, but it was noted by Director of Sport Neil Kumar that they will be making a special effort to have a team at this year’s event.
