Berbice stages biggest Mash ever

NUMEROUS families in Region Six turned out to view the Mashramani festivities on Sunday in observance of Guyana’s 41st Republic anniversary.
Chairman of the National Events Committee, Region Six, Faizal Jafarally, said that about 50,000 people lined the parade route, making it Berbice’s biggest Mashramani ever.
He noted that families travelled from as far as Crabwood Creek on the Corentyne and Mara, East Bank Berbice to view the event that started at Tacama Turn and culminated at State House, New Amsterdam.
There were nine floats in the parade including the Regional Democratic Council, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and the People’s Progressive Party, which had the largest contingent.
Mashramani, observed under the theme ‘Showcasing our Culture; Sustaining our pride’ was also held in Linden, Region 10 and Georgetown, Region Four.
Guyana celebrated Republic this year with numerous activities such as calypso, and chutney competitions, illuminated buildings, children’s road march and the main event, the float parade held on February 23.
