One feared dead as truck topples on interior road

ONE person is feared dead as a truck laden with groceries and several drums of fuel toppled on the road leading from Buck Hall to Port Kaituma in the interior on Monday morning . Reports reaching the Guyana Chronicle said some 14 young men were on the  truck when disaster struck.
The truck, owned by Zambie Barakat, was taking in groceries and fuel to his mining operation in the North West District via the Buck Hall to Port Kaituma road when it toppled while going up a steep hill.
Reports said its cargo of groceries and drums of fuel along with the men were hurled into the deep, forested valley below. All the men were accounted for except Elvin Patron, who is missing and feared dead.
Eight of them escaped serious injuries while six were admitted to the Suddie Hospital with cuts and bruises.
A visit to the Suddie Hospital on Tuesday revealed that five of the men were treated and sent home while one, Sterfan Carmel, was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in  serious condition.
Relatives of the missing man said he is the only son of his parents. They said the family has heard several tales concerning the fate of the young man since the accident but don’t know which to believe.
His mother who lives at Huis’T Dieren is very worried and is putting her trust in God that her son is alive and well.
Some of the men were labourers who work in the gold and diamond fields, while some work on the truck as porters.
The injured men include Kevin George, Delon George, Rickland Edwards, Glen Henry and Sterfan Carmel.
The police have since visited the scene of the accident and are investigating.
