Chairman extolls National Budget benefits for Amerindians

CHAIRMAN of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Alli Baksh told scores of Amerindians at Kabakaburi, 40 miles South along Pomeroon River, on Tuesday, that the $161.4 billion National Budget has something for every Guyanese.
Speaking at a community meeting, he said the budgetary allocations are aimed at continuing development across the country and improving the living standard of Guyanese.
Baksh said a large sum will be spent in the Health Sector for the continued provision of excellent care for all.
He said the Government will improve the delivery of dental service in the Pomeroon during this year, when the boat ‘Janet’ is put into operation to benefit all State run health centres and posts.
Baksh said the free medicine policy will be maintained and more doctors will be sent to Amerindian communities to enhance health services.
About education, he said the Government will also provide Amerindians with opportunities to study for the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) tests in the Secondary Tops established at many primary schools.
Baksh said Government has budgeted $26M for the construction of a modern dormitory at Essequibo Technical Institute (ETI) so as to offer students from the hinterland areas in Region One (Barima/Waini), Pomeroon and Essequibo Islands live in accommodation free of cost while pursuing studies also at the Guyana School of Agriculture.
He observed that many Amerindian communities are now getting electricity generators and Government is pushing to boost Information Technology (IT) in them.
Baksh mentioned the One Lap Top Per Family Project for vulnerable people countrywide and more land will be made available at Warapana, in Upper Pomeroon, to increase cultivation of non-traditional crops.
