THE charge of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition against policeman Quamie Inniss was dismissed by Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday last. Inniss has since been interdicted from duty. He was charged for being in possession of a Glock semi automatic pistol and 12 rounds of .32 ammunition while not being licensed to carry the gun and ammunition.
The gun and ammunition were retrieved from under a flag in the Guard Hut at Police C.I.D. Compound, Eve Leary, by Assistant Supt. of Police Phillip Azore, in the presence of Sentry Constable Klass and Sergeant McCoy.
It was alleged that Inniss had placed the gun containing ammunition under the flag after he noticed Assistant Supt. Azore in the Compound of the CID Head Quarters.
However, after hearing the case submissions from the attorney-at-law for Inniss, Mr. Lyndon Amsterdam, the Magistrate upheld the submissions and ruled that the elements of the offence were not proven and found that the evidence of the witnesses who are still members of the Guyana Police Force were shown to be manifestly unreliable and tenuous.
The Magistrate also observed that the gun and ammunition were never properly identified for the court and tendered in evidence.
She also found that the gun and ammunition were labelled in the absence of Inniss, after Azore had instructed that Inniss be taken to the Tactical Services Unit and placed under close arrest.
An obviously happy and relieved Inniss quickly departed the court after he heard the verdict. It remains to be seen if Quamie Inniss will be allowed to continue as a policeman in the Guyana Police Force as a result of the dismissal of the charge against him.
