Get involved in proper waste disposal

The Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown wish to alert citizens that, the authorities are continuing to do preparatory works to the landfill site, at Haags Bosch. Meanwhile, the Mayor and City Council has advertised, in the public media, an invitation to tenders for the collection and disposal of municipal solid waste from local communities in the city of Georgetown to the land-fill site at Haags Bosch. Closing date for the tenders is February 11, 2011.
However, the City Constabulary, the Municipal Solid Waste Management Department and the Environmental Health Division, of the Council’s Public Health Department, have intensified their anti-litter operations, in different wards of the city.
Over the last month, the Environmental Health Section carried out 203 inspections, in the city. These included: houses and cottages, tenement rooms, yards and conveniences, common lodging houses and apartments and hairdressers’ premises.  A total of 77 notices were served to encourage citizens to correct various defects, on their premises.
A major challenge facing solid waste management is the absence of garbage receptacles on premises, in the city.  According to the Municipal and District Councils Act, Chapter 28:01, home-owners must provide adequate receptacles for the proper disposal of their waste.  However, a public health report revealed that a significant number of residents do not have proper refuse receptacles.
This encourages dumping of garbage on parapets, roadsides and other thoroughfares.  Therefore, the Council is calling upon all citizens to make provision for the requisite receptacles for disposal of their waste in an environmentally friendly manner.
Also, the Georgetown Municipality is appealing to private waste collectors to help in the effort to secure the integrity of the natural environment by desisting from dumping waste in places not designated for that purpose.
This practice has serious implications for the health of the environment and the public, including permitting mosquito breeding and harbouring of files, rodents and other vectors.
The Council believes that citizens should see the proper disposal of waste as their personal responsibility; it should not be left to the Council and other related agencies.  Even so, the Council does not have the resources to single-handedly deal with the garbage situation in Georgetown.
The high incidence of littering and the increasing number of accumulations of waste, in the city, make it urgent for all organizations, groups and individuals to get involved in proper waste disposal.
