ROSHY Zapata, of Carupano, Venezuela, was refused bail yesterday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged with fishing illegally in Guyana’s waters without a foreign licence. He pleaded not guilty, but Police Sergeant, Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the defendant was captain of the foreign vessel caught fishing 38 miles north along the Berbice River on Wednesday, January 19.
When the magistrate asked Zapata about it, he said his licence is in the custody of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
The Prosecutor produced a document that licensed Zapata to fish in Venezuela and not in Guyana.
The case has been transferred to the New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, for January 31.
