A TEACHER attached to a West Berbice secondary school remains in police custody following allegations of rape and other sexually related offences.
Berbice Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Steven Merai told the Guyana Chronicle that he was present when the teacher was arrested at the learning institution. This newspaper understands that the arrest was made by armed police ranks at around 10:30hrs, in full view of all present.
The male teacher was handcuffed and driven to Central Police Station, in New Amsterdam where a thorough investigation has been launched.
Meanwhile, sources say that the discovery of a cellular phone, which, when perused, contained graphic images of the detained teacher having sexual intercourse with an identifiable female student, who appeared to be drugged, may have been cause for the arrest.
The images, the source said, also revealed scenes of the Secondary School where the alleged offences are suspected to have been committed.
Following the arrest of the teacher, four students, accompanied by teachers, were taken to the New Amsterdam Station to assist the sleuths with their investigations.
The parent of a minor, who was detained, said he was disappointed in his daughter’s teachers for not informing him or the child’s mother of her whereabouts.
According to the father, who was at Central Police Station at 18:15hrs, he had earlier travelled to Georgetown to conduct some business, and had just returned to his West Berbice home, where, upon enquiring about the whereabouts of his daughter, got no positive response.
He said that shortly afterwards, another offspring, who is employed by Guyana Sugar Corporation, received a telephone call from his sibling informing him of her location.
The parent said his daughter, who was ill and had to seek medical treatment a few days ago, had related that she had borrowed someone’s phone to make the call.
As a result of the information, the family motored to East Berbice, in an effort to take their child home.
“When the teachers want things, or they want to take her anywhere, they usually telephone. They could have done the same, informing us of her whereabouts; we were worried,” said the distraught parent, whose right leg was in a cast.
This newspaper was reliably informed that relatives of the suspect have since retained a former magistrate as his legal counsel.
