THURSDAY January 20, 2011 started as any normal day with the usual home engagements prior to leaving for work on our very overcrowded, busy streets.
However, two incidents occurred which removed the mundane normalcy exposing more indirect normalities that I found frightening. The first incident occurred at the approach of the DHB from the western side i.e. going to Georgetown. A white Toyota PGG 8974 approached the entrance to the bridge, outside the lane of cued vehicles. Stopped by a traffic cop,the driver was told to return to the back of the line. He however, continued his way with total disregard, disrespect and disdain for the authority of the traffic rank, (who was only left to say, “I gat yuh licence number,”); the traffic laws, the rights of other citizens and most importantly the selfishness displayed by the driver in the presence of his teenage passenger garbed in Q.C uniform.

This young, bright, impressionable mind has just been influenced/ tarnished with the attitude of misuse and abuse of positions and privileges.
Sir, your disrespect to that figure of authority must be remembered when some cop displays disrespect towards your rights as we read daily. The cycle continues.
The responsibility to change such cycle of actions lies with those who are at the top since it is they who set the laws, policies and examples.
Selfishness is suffocating this nation!!
The other incident highlighted a total lack of respect; decency; civic responsibility; integrity; honesty and respect for other peoples’ property.
A young, tall, light complexioned, well dressed gentleman with a laptop bag over shoulder walked into my office and picked up my newly gifted T-mobile slide cell phone from my desk.
This selfish act has denied me all information, money/credit, personal data and convenience of my phone; but more importantly, the pleasure, satisfaction and emotional attachment to a gift from a respectful, grateful and caring offspring.
The development of this nation can only be positive when we produce citizens that are selfless, thoughtful, respectful and honest.
