Grenadian James blitzes year’s fastest 200

LBUQUERQUE, New Mexico,  (CMC) – Kirani James continued to impress on the track, when he posted the fastest 200 metres time for the year in the United States last Friday at the Cherry & Silver Invitational. The teenaged Grenadian set a University of Alabama school record and automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 20.58 seconds at the Albuquerque Convention Centre.
“Kirani  was outstanding,” said UA head coach Harvey Glance said. “It was an unbelievable performance for Kirani in running the fastest 200m in the World this season.”
James’ also set a track record by 0.16 seconds, and bested the previous UA record of 20.71 set by Latonel Williams in 2003.
The 18-year-old James, a sophomore at UA, is the reigning World 400 metres youth champion, as well as the World 200 and 400 junior champion.
He is also the reigning CARIFTA Games 200 and 400 champion.
