MORE than a week has elapsed with the police on the Essequibo Coast still being unable to provide the presiding Magistrate there with an answer as to why a driver who was taken to the Suddie Police Station for not wearing a seat belt was not charged for committing the offence. The question was raised on Thursday (2011-01-13) after the driver’s wife, Nandani, in answer to a disorderly behaviour charge at the Suddie Police Station, made an open statement in the Suddie Court linking a traffic cop to collecting money to drop the charge against her husband.
Having pleaded guilty, the woman explained that she was in company of her husband when he was stopped by a traffic rank who instructed him to drive to the station for not wearing a seat belt.
She also stated that while her husband was in custody, he had to send to his boss man, whose name was not mentioned, for $7,000 and after getting the money, he was sent away.
From my own knowledge, the driver’s boss man is a well known contractor and rice miller.
After the magistrate’s question remained unanswered, the case against the woman was postponed to Thursday and during her appearance on that day, it was no different, with the prosecutor claiming that investigations are ongoing.
Nandani will have to return to court on Friday 28.
Public concerns have been mounting as to whether there would be a ‘cover up’ for the cop’s malfeasance.
