Policewoman with 16 years service on corruption charge

A WOMAN, with 16 years service in the Guyana Police Force (GPF),
appeared in Court yesterday, on charges of corrupt transaction by agent and demanding money with menace.

Before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, Faye Perreira (no address given) was accused of having, last January 4, at Beterverwagting Police Station, being an agent of the Government, corruptly obtained $50,000 from Hookcumchand for foregoing charges on him.
She also pleaded not guilty to having, on January 12, at Beterverwagting Police Station, too, demanded $40,000 from Hookcumchand, with intent to steal the sum.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant had been arrested and was in custody at Beterverwagting when the defendant demanded the money.
The Prosecutor said senior officers saw when the cash was handed over to Perreira after the virtual complainant made a report.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Patrice Henry, for the policewoman, made an unsuccessful application for her to be released on her own recognisance and the magistrate ordered that the defendant post $125,000 surety until tomorrow.
