I HAVE seen many letters commenting on the PPP’s presidential candidate. I want to have my say. I believe that the best man for the job is Donald Ramotar, the Party’s General-Secretary. Ramotar is a tried and proven leader.
He became General-Secretary at a very difficult time, immediately after the passing of Cheddi Jagan. He led the party to victory in 1997.
Immediately after, Ramotar stood like an immovable rock and defended the party fearlessly in public, it was he who inspired PPP supporters to stay firm and strong in the wave of fire and beatings on the streets. This is not the only time.
Ramotar has always been the foremost defender of the party and faces down all hostilities against it.
I have had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Ramotar on more than one occasion; he has the ability to put people at ease, to listen and to advise.
I believe that outside of President Jagdeo he is the most popular leader in Guyana. Party members love him very much for they know that he can be relied on to defend the PPP.
Ramotar also has a good grasp of the situation in our country and abroad. You only have to hear him when he speaks or when he gives interviews to appreciate the depth of knowledge he has on political and other subjects.
In my view the modest Ramotar towers above them all.
