House of Nyabinghi hosts special assembly

The Theocracy House of Nyabinghi, through the Guyana Rastafari Council (GRC), is inviting interested members of the Rastafari community to attend a special Nyabinghi assembly – which started Thursday and continues to Monday at the Tucber Nyabinghi House in New Amsterdam. “The Nyabinghi reasonings will revolve around the planning of a comprehensive programme of activities by the Rastafarian community to commemorate the International Year for People of African Descent (IYPAD),” according to a release from the House of Nyabinghi.
“Among the plans are special African History Month cultural activities; outreach to several villages and towns around the country; a national conference involving all the Houses and Mansions to discuss issues pertaining to the theme of the IYPAD – “People of African Descent – Recognition, Justice and Development”, and initiating several projects including the development of agricultural enterprises and the establishment of a school for Rastafari children.
“The Rastafari community is also expressing concern over its non-representation on the official Standing Committee appointed by the Guyana Government, and chaired by Dr. James Rose, and for the government to come up with a comprehensive programme of activities for the IYPAD.
“The Theocracy House of Nyabinghi is also indicating that the organization wishes to have full representation on any government-facilitated programme of activities for the IYPAD on behalf of the Rastafari community as ‘I and I are a peculiar nation of people descended from our African ancestors, and as such issues pertaining to the recognition, justice and development of this dispossessed and marginalized section of the Guyanese society are crucially needed to be addressed’,” the release concludes.
