Wounding wife defendant granted bail over Police objection

A WOMAN charged with wounding her reputed husband was granted bail, over Police objection, when she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday. Donna Hunte, of Lot 7 Rasville, Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding Kenneth Rogers on January 9.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said the defendant and the virtual complainant live in the same home, where they had a heated argument.
The Prosecutor said Hunte armed herself with a knife and stabbed Rogers in his abdomen, causing him to be hospitalized.
Pindar objected to bail for Hunte, when the magistrate enquired from her, if she would have objected if a man was charged for the same offence, she answered in the affirmative.
Hunte alleged that Rogers, constantly, abuses her, and on that day, was under the influence of alcohol and they had a scuffle after he attacked her with a knife.
She said it was during the scuffle that he was injured.
Hunte was ordered to post $50,000 surety until January 28.
