President reassures Demerara River boat operators stellings not for sale

BOAT operators plying the Stabroek to Vreed-en-Hoop route were convinced that there is no intention to sell the two stellings after they met President Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday.
Vice President of the Demerara Speedboat Association, Lancelot Moseley, led a delegation to meet the President and Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn at the Office of the President on the issue.
He later told the Government Information Agency that the assurance given by government cleared the air for operators who depend on the stellings to maintain their livelihood.
Earlier this month, government denied reports that there are intentions to sell the Stabroek and Vreed-en-Hoop stellings.
The Demerara River boat operators were also promised government’s support for a shed and a more comfortable platform for the passengers traversing the route.
“Minister Benn, who we all know is a man of action, had promised to look at it sometime soon,” Moseley said.
At present there are over 50 boats operating the Stabroek to Vreed-en-Hoop route. Passengers are required to comply with a turn system that is strictly monitored by the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) officials on both sides of the river.
The Public Works Ministry had laid out building a bulwark aback of the boats to prevent sinking, floatation devices under seats, and a cover to keep out rain and sunlight.
Moseley said boats plying the Demerara River have met all the Public Works Ministry’s specifications and will be in compliance with stipulated safety regulations.
“Safety for our passengers is our motto,” Moseley said.
