Minister of Transport and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn, has said, among the focus this year towards improvement at the Transport and Harbours Department, is having a new cadre of pilots, captains and inspectors on the new ferry vessels. And according to him, some amount of training will be done both locally and in China on aspects such as ship handling.
The Governments of Guyana and China recently inked an agreement for two new roll-on, roll-off ferry vessels to be built in China, and will ply the route from Parika to Supernaam in Essequibo.
The vessels are expected to be delivered in the latter part of this year, but there is a demand for them almost immediately.
According to Minister Benn, with the additional vessels from Berbice and the two new vessels operating on a shorter run, it will allow for better logistics, movement of people and will attract new travellers.
However before the vessels arrive, the Adventure and Parika stellings will be modified to accommodate them, also the infrastructural works needed to rectify the ramp at the new ferry stelling at Supenaam will also be done.
