THE Civil Society Committee for the International Year for People of African Descent ushered in the year and launched its programme of activities for 2011 on New Year’s Eve at a ceremony at the Girl Guides Pavilion, Brickdam. Among those present at the occasion, ushered in by the Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green, were Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Region 4 Chairman, Mr. Clement Corlette.
During the event, presided over by General- Secretary of the Civil Society Committee, Mr. Clifford Blackett, along with Vice President Brother David Graham and Ms. Shirley Dass, presentations were also made by the Prime Minister, Mayor Greene, Mr. Corlette and the President of the Civil Society Committee, Noah Yahshuarun.
The ceremony was well attended and everyone enjoyed the interactive reception afterwards as they extended best wishes to the African community.
The United Nations has designated 2011 to be the International Year for People of African Descent in relation to their full enjoyment, integration and participation in all aspects of the economic, cultural, social, civil and political life.
