New Year’s Day thief jailed

RON Burnett (no address given) was yesterday sentenced to nine months imprisonment for simple larceny.
Before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, the prisoner pleaded guilty to stealing shoes and clothing, valued $185,000, property of Simone Gomes, at Bartica Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) Stelling on New Year’s Day.

The defendant confessed that he picked up the bags containing the booty and was about to sell some to two women who approached him when he was arrested.

Two charged after confrontation over stall theft
JUNIOR Johnson, of Lot 606 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, on a simple larceny charge.
He pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, between January 2 and 3, he stole 40 pairs of ladies shoes, valued $100,000, property of Shawndell Chand.
In the same Court, Philbert Pillew pleaded not guilty to unlawfully assaulting Johnson, so as to cause him actual bodily harm.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting,told the Court that Pillew is Chand’s husband, who received information that someone was inside her stall; he confronted  Johnson and was cuffed about the face several times.
Pillew was released on his own recognisance while Johnson was ordered to post $75,000 bail until January 18.
