SALEEMA Mohamed called ‘Sally’, of Lot 256 Zeelugt Old Road, East Bank Essequibo, who was knifed to death, allegedly by her husband Amrit Mohan had rejected his plea, by telephone on Monday, for her to return to him, her relatives said yesterday.
They said he was in contact with her since his return, last Thursday from Trinidad, where he worked as a joiner. According to them, he pleaded with her for them to reunite at his grandmother’s home where he was staying.
Her grandmother, 65-year-old Shirley (only name given), who lives in the same yard but another house, said she was sitting on her verandah and saw when her granddaughter went to take a bath about 21:00 hrs.
She said, shortly after, she heard the victim shouting for ‘Nannie’ but by the time she changed her clothes to go and enquire what had happened, she realised something was terribly wrong after calling and getting no response from Sally.
The elder woman said she then searched the house and, on entering the bedroom, saw the bloodied body on the bed and alerted the neighbours, who summoned the Police.
Shirley said Sally lived alone and Mohan must have slipped into her house undetected to waylay and murder her granddaughter.
She said Sally was stabbed several parts of her body, including her neck, back and chest and she succumbed to her injuries.
The grieving woman said, on Sunday, Sally would have celebrated her 21st birthday.
She had been married to Mohan about two years but they had constant conflicts and, eventually, the wife moved out of the matrimonial home and went to live at Zeelugt.
Sally, a school teacher at the Islamic Academy at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, was described as an intelligent, respected person by her colleagues who gathered at her home yesterday.
Meanwhile, at Mohan’s Lot 17 Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo residence, his relatives said that he always lived with his blind 79-year-old grandmother, Gaitree Hakim.
They said, when he returned to Guyana, he wanted to reunite with his wife. He had dinner on Monday evening and left, saying he was going out and returned sometime after 23:00 hrs.
A neighbour, Bibi Nazeela Rahaman, said she was aroused from sleep about 23:30 hrs when she heard loud voices and, when she got out of bed, she saw several policemen outside.
She put on her external lights and saw Mohan’s body dangling from a mango tree in the backyard.
His corpse was taken away by a hearse that Police summoned.
The two-year marriage did not produce any children and it is reported that the couple had a loud quarrel on the telephone and after Mohan killed his wife, he sent a text message to her cell phone stating that he had already prayed for her.
