Registration for 2011 CSEC completed, candidates being assessed

Khandai reports…
REGISTRATION for the 2011 May-June Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations has been completed, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Pulandar Khandai announced yesterday.

He said candidates, from both public and private learning institutions, are, currently, being processed.
Khandai said, this year, the total number of entrants is 11,362 and, of those, 141 secured grade one passes in eight and more subjects.
The overall grades one to three passes were 42 per cent females and 24 per cent males and remediation courses for the CSEC students are ongoing, he said, adding that they have the Ministry’s support.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Shaik Baksh said, previously, that Guyana is making significant strides at the secondary level and is “almost on par” with Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Jamaica.
He maintained that his ministry’s interventions are working and has seen improved performance in English, with grades one to three passes moving from 50 per cent in 2009 to 59 per cent in 2010.
The grades one to four passes in 2009 amounted to 79 per cent but rose to 86 per cent in 2010.
The showing in English Literature progressed from an unsatisfactory 38 per cent passes in grades one to three to 66 per cent in 2010 but Mathematics and the sciences continue to pose a challenge because of a lack of teachers, Baksh said.
He committed to increasing the resources allocated to education, in the effort to ensure that children are well equipped to perform at their best and achieve equity across the sector.
