A 44-year-old gold miner died when he lost control of the pickup he was driving on the Mahdia/Mabura road early yesterday morning.
Dead is Lawrence Angus, popularly known as “Cooley”, of No. 30 Village West Coast Berbice.
Two male passengers in the vehicle were rushed to the Linden Hospital where they were treated and subsequently discharged.
The dead man’s nephew, Ulan Angus, told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that he and his uncle worked in Mahdia and they were both returning to the coast for the holidays, himself driving one pickup and his uncle the other, when the accident occurred.
He said he did not witness the accident because the older Angus crossed the river at Mango Landing by ferry before he did and he had to wait for the second crossing.
He said he was horrified while driving towards Mabura about eight miles from the Mabura Police Station when he saw his uncle lying on the roadway, already dead, apparently from severe head injuries.
There were some persons standing nearby and it was from them that he learnt of the details of the accident.
Ulan Angus said that the older Angus had been the operator of a mining operation at North Fork Mahdia, Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni).
He was not married or known to have any children.
The miner’s body was brought down to Lyken Funeral parlour in Georgetown pending a post mortem.
