Guyanese wrap up successful Marlins swimming meet

GUYANA’S Niall Roberts achieved a personal-best time of 24.75 in the Boys 15 and over 50m freestyle at Marlins Invitation Meet in Trinidad but was pipped to the gold by Trinidad and Tobago’s Strasser Sankar in an exciting and very close race.
Another Guyanese Jaime Jabar swam a new personal-best time of 27.00 to place 14th in the same race, while Hannibal Gaskin finished 15th in the Boys 11-12 50-metre freestyle.

In the Girls 13-14 age group, Athena Gaskin and Jessica Stephenson both achieved personal-best times as they finished 9th (30.59) and 13th (31.07) respectively while Soroya Simmons completed the event in 18th place. 
Stephenson continued her gold rush with a clean sweep of all the breaststroke events ending with victory in the 100m in a Carifta A time of 1:17.13 that saw her finish seven seconds faster than her peers in the 13-14 age and over 4 seconds faster than the 15 and over girls.
Athena also swam the same event to finish 10th, her brother Hannibal in the Boys 11-12 again achieved a personal best in the 100 breaststroke of 1:28.29 and Jaime placed sixth in the 15 and over category.
Completing a great meet for Guyana was Simmons who won her first medal of the championship by taking bronze in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:17.67. 
Athena Gaskin was the sole 200m Individual Medley swimmer for Guyana achieving ninth place, Hannibal Gaskin swam to 16th in the 100m backstroke behind T&T’s Jabari Baptise who set a new record for his country.
With over 350 swimmers from the region and Sweden, the Marlins Invitational Meet is undoubtedly the best individual and club meet in the region and Guyana’s swimmers definitely made their presence felt.
