Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), Mahender Sharma, yesterday admitted that they have launched an investigation following the discovery on Saturday of suspected illegal diesel at a wharf in Parika, East Bank Essequibo.
He added that so far the businessman concerned is yet to produce the relevant documentation to prove ownership and authenticity of the fuel which was found during a routine check by GEA staffers on a barge moored at a wharf.
The wharf is owned by a Parika businessman who operates a chain of gas stations.
Mr. Sharma said that they have carried out tests which determined that the fuel found is diesel. It was removed from the barge and is in custody of GEA.
He said, “Investigations are ongoing and it would be unfair for me to say anymore at this point.”
