Good to see Financial Intelligence Unit established

I am very pleased to see this unit which has been in the embryonic stage for ages finally taken birth with its recent pronouncements on new controls being placed on the non Bank cambio sector which even the smallest child knows that many suspect transactions are processed through these “finance houses”.
However, I would like to see Mr. Paul Geer and his team combining with the Guyana Revenue Authority to enforce the laws in relation to seizing property whereby the “owners” cannot show where their incomes came from to erect these large buildings now dotting the landscape of downtown Georgetown and mansions going up like hot air in the suburbs.
Quite recently in a Canadian city, police seized about 8 luxury cars, a strip mall and other properties all part of money laundering activities conducted by a gang of criminals. Recently in an article in the newspapers, questions were raised as to who the owner(s) was/were for some tall buildings in the centre of Georgetown and it is clear to the local populace that the people in question have no known track record in business for any length of time.
It is very important that both Mr. Geer and Mr. Sattaur earn their pay and do not become seat warmers.
