A MASQUERADE competition, jointly sponsored by Pomeroon Oil Mill Inc. and Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) will kick off the festive season on Essequibo Coast. A release, from Alfro Alphonso Group of Companies, which owns the oil mill, said preparations for the annual contest are underway, ahead of the December 18 event on the tarmac of Xenon Hotel, Restaurant and Bar at Charity.
Mr. Andron Alphonso said masquerading during the Christmas holidays is an important part of Guyanese culture.
He said the main reason for the staging is to resuscitate the culture which was dying slowly over the past years.
Alphonso said he wants to raise awareness of it countrywide because it is part of the national cultural heritage.
The organisers of the rivalry said $900,000 in cash prizes are being offered and part of the proceeds will go to charitable and community based organisations in the Region.
Several bands, among them Village Ram, Young Dynamics and Taurus, have already registered to be participants and some of Guyana’s top artistes, including ‘Jumo’ and ‘Big Red’, will entertain the expected large crowd during the day long programme.
