THE target for the 2011 Spring crop, is 4.4 million bags of paddy from approximately 78, 0000 hectares, General-Secretary of the Rice Producers Association (RPA), Mr. Dharamkumar Seeraj announced on Monday.
The rice producing Regions are Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), Five (Mahaica/Berbice) and Six (East Berbice/Corentyne).
Region Two has already commenced sowing and land preparation is ongoing in the other Regions, Seeraj reported, noting that the current weather is good for planting and poses no current challenge to farmers.
But the persisting problem is the non-payment to producers by Mahaicony Rice Limited (MRL), which owes $240M, he said.
