The staff of the National Psychiatric Hospital has identified the body fished out of the Canje Creek on Monday as that of 38-year-old Dwayne Viera.
The decomposing body was identified by a staff member, who, on reading the article in the press, went to the Arokium Funeral Home, where he observed distinguishing marks including twelve toes, a scar on the nose, and a cut on the left ear.
Viera, was admitted to the institution in New Amsterdam on November 25 last.
According to information, the man was among scores of others who were taken to the mental health institution prior to the 4th Regular Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Union of South American Nations held in Georgetown, recently.
This newspaper was told that there is no information with regard to the man’s last place of abode, nor a name of his next of kin.
He had got away from the institution on December 4.
Berbice Crime Chief Superintendent Ramsey told this newspaper that the post mortem scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed pending the arrival of a relative.
