TOSHAO of Mainstay/Whyaka, Ms. Yvonne Pearson has reported that current heavy rainfall on the Essequibo Coast is having an adverse effect on the pineapple crop in the Amerindian community.
Speaking at the final Regional Toshoas Meeting for this year, in the Regional Boardroom at Anna Regina yesterday, she said the cultivation is badly affected and production has dropped.
According to her, 38 farmers in the village have started work to clear more land for growing the fruit but the raging weather has prevented their progress.
Pearson said the low production has caused the pineapple factory to be out of operation and she blamed the crop failure on climate change.
Farmers, however, are supplying the local market at Anna Regina on a daily basis.
