At Uncle Eddie’s Home…

IDCE social work students execute one-day project
STUDENTS of Social Work (two) 2010 in the Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE) of University of Guyana (UG) undertook a one-day field project, last November 27, at Uncle Eddie’s Home, Jackson Street, Tucville, Georgetown.
It started with cobwebbing and cleaning of the premises, followed by the sharing of a meal they prepared at the institution, after which the students groomed and pampered the residents and entertained them with Christmas carols.

The students also made a donation to assist with the maintenance of Uncle Eddie’s, which was established 37 years ago through the initiative of overseas-based Guyanese, Mr. Edward Holford who is now deceased.
The hospice has the capacity to accommodate 40 persons. However, dependent  upon a management decision, two persons are also allowed to share one room and that can increase the number to 60 or more.
However, most residents told the visitors they preferred not to share a room.
To become a resident of Uncle Eddie’s, an applicant must have attained the age of 60 years and be mentally alert and physically well.
Presently, the institution has no doctor to take care of those living there but there is one nurse aide, one qualified nurse and 13 other staff members.
The residents are served three meals daily.
