President Bharrat Jagdeo and Guyana Red Cross Society Secretary General Dorothy Fraser Monday discussed ways in which the society can fit itself into the niche for youth projects under the purview of the Government.
The two discussed the role of the society in recent times, including fund-raising for disasters in the Caribbean, more particularly Haiti, and the number of people who benefited from training by the society and were deployed to disaster sites. A similar exercise was undertaken by the organisation in Barbados and St Vincent after hurricane Tomas struck.
“We talked about the real role the young people are playing in there (disaster risk reduction). We talked about the role Red Cross is playing in road safety,” Fraser told the Government Information Agency (GINA).
The society provides voluntary services in accordance with the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, to alleviate human suffering and promote the society’s principles amongst all people.
The areas of activity include health, social services/welfare, HIV/AIDS, welfare and relief, education/training, counselling, student/youth issues, caring for the disabled and advocacy.(GINA)
