UNDER the current administration, the people of Guyana have enjoyed a sustained rise in their standard of living in the area of housing. The long, hard years of the regretted PNC regime has left hundreds from the Georgetown area living as squatters. This is most unacceptable and should not be depicted as the way of life in any urbanized area. As a matter of fact, this should not be the manner in which any citizen of a civilized country should be forced to live.
Under the current administration, many Guyanese are privileged to have an opportunity to acquire and develop a sizable piece of land for themselves and their family which they can call their own.
This was not the case prior to 1992, when the PNC’s suppression of Guyanese initiated and resulted in what we now frown upon as degrading and insulting.
No individual should have to live under those circumstances. The initiative of the PPP to make available and to distribute house lots to Guyanese is one of monumental importance to the lives and livelihood of the citizens of Guyana.
So far, the PPP has distributed more house lots and have aided the development of those lots through easy access loans provided by different commercial banks.
The 2010 Budget targeted the distribution of 5,500 house lots and 3,750 land titles. When it comes to sheltering the nation, the government considers this serious business and as such, makes every effort possible to ensure that each family will be guaranteed the sense of security that is synonymous with having a roof over their family’s heads and a place that they can call their own.
