In Berbice…
A SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD girl delivered a baby boy in a motor car, just outside the Accident and Emergency Unit of New Amsterdam Hospital, in Berbice, yesterday.
It happened after the mother had been told, elsewhere, that she needed to go home and rest.
Parbattie Etwaroo, of Lot 192 Shieldstown, Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, had visited her aunt-in-law, Bibi Nazarudeen Shamsudeen, about 100 metres from her home, shortly after 11:30 h and informed her of impending labour pains.
The elder woman said, in company with an older sister of the expectant mother, they joined a minibus and travelled to Fort Wellington Hospital, West Coast Berbice, where Dr. Sinclair and an attending nurse, after examining the pregnant teen, advised her that her pregnancy was only seven months advanced and she needed to go home and rest.
However, on returning to where she lives, the mother also of an 11-month-old girl, complained of experiencing severe back and abdominal pains.
Shamsudeen told the Guyana Chronicle that, on reaching the Blairmont car park, where transport across the Berbice River Bridge is available, she indicated, to the minibus driver that another vehicle, preferably a motor car, was urgently needed and they undertook the journey to East Berbice.
However, in the vicinity of the bridge, the baby started to emerge and, on arrival at New Amsterdam Hospital, nurses at the Accident and Emergency Unit, along with their colleagues in the Maternity Unit and porters responded quickly and, in a professional manner, aided the delivery.
Shamsudeen was high in praises for the alertness of the staff while the Administrator, Mr. Leslie Cadagon helped to control the curious crowd.
Mother and newborn child were reported to be resting comfortably at press time.
