The visionary leadership of President Bharrat Jagdeo indisputably has been demonstrated nationally, regionally, and internationally and has catalysed this country out of obscurity into the realm of recognisable policy-makers, which is no mean feat for a developing nation that, less than two decades ago, was an anathema to the Region, and despised internationally for the decadence of its leadership and the consequential appalling poverty of the nation.
Today Guyana, while still struggling, is ranked among one of the more developed third-world nations, mainly thanks to the astute economic management and massive investments in the social and financial sectors in the country.
Guyana is currently poised at the crossroads that could either lead to a glorious future of this nation, or a reversal and deceleration of its growth patterns and consequently of its fortunes if the Guyanese people do not seek to guard the gains achieved to date against the unpatriotic elements who are determinedly strategising to attain high office, even if they have to once more impoverish this country and its people.
The future of a nation is circumscribed, to a large extent, by incidents of the past, but it is the will and the spirit of the people that determine whether they will allow their past to constrain and constrict their development trajectory, or whether to let the historic synergies of struggle impel an impetus of cataclysmic ferocity in their upward mobility that will optimize and ultimately culminate in a peaceful and prosperous nation.
President Bharrat Jagdeo and the PPP/C administration have always extended a hand to all Guyanese to work together in common endeavours to facilitate empowerment of individuals and communities. The President has, time and again, exhorted community and religious leaders to take a more proactive lead in harnessing the synergies that would create a dynamic to accelerate socio-economic development fundamentals within the nation and has expressed his appreciation to Guyana’s religious leaders for their unity and cooperation, especially on initiatives that the Government drives, which he said is difficult to find elsewhere in the world, because of what he terms “the exploitation of religion” that creates bigotry that leads to wars in some of the more developed countries in the world. He urged the religious leaders to continue “this unique characteristic of Guyana.”
Divided, Guyana cannot overcome the constraints to our holistic development. However, the liberation of minds that has been transforming communities into a positive mode, where Guyanese are recognizing that their personal and national progress lies in a spirit where negative outlook and approaches to endeavour should be relegated to the nether regions so that the future can become clearly defined through productive and visionary concepts that could translate to wealth creational activities.
It is this thinking and this pathway that will liberate our country and create avenues to eventual prosperity for everyone.
