DIWALI, as we know, represents the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali reassures us that our adversities and challenges can be overcome and that we can shine in our society, no matter how dark the night is, since Diwali is the darkest night of the year. This we see is the importance and essence of Diwali. Hence, the IAC condemns those acts that desecrate this most auspicious festival for the Hindus.
Diwali has great impact on the lives of Hindus. It has a universal message of Hope…hope for a brighter tomorrow. When we pray, we say ‘Dhan Dayee Namastute’ – Oh Universal Mother, Bless us so that we can have a more prosperous future and rid ourselves of poverty (Poverty of thoughts, intellect, wisdom, etc).
Maha Lakshmi, whom is revered at this time, represents wealth, peace and prosperity, which all Guyanese share for this beautiful country. And moreso, she represents motherhood and womanhood at large, that which the Hindus preserve and cherish.
Diwali is indeed a national festival for us in Guyana and Guyanese of all walks of life will participate in activities involving Diwali.
As we pay respects to the feminine aspect of the Supreme, Maha Lakshmi, we want to use this opportunity to voice concerns as to what is happening in our society as is relates to Domestic Violence and hope that the authorities deal with these promptly and firmly.
Incidents like Neesa Gopaul’s should not be left to fade into the dark and off the scene for it is inhumane for such actions to be committed.
Which father would like this for his daughter? Would anyone accept this so easily if she were our child and we were alive? I am sure the answer is ‘No’.
Hence we are working on and advocating the principle of protection of women’s rights and us men should support them in every way possible and allow them to be empowered so that we can reduce these vile tendencies in our society to take advantage of our women folks. Let us unite and cooperate to eradicate this total disrespect to womanhood through domestic violence.
May the divine light of Diwali shine within ourselves so that we can share more knowledge and show greater affection and compassion for each other.
On this Diwali, let us continue to reach out to our brothers and sisters in our dear land and dedicate our efforts towards the development and prosperity of all.
