New recreational facility commissioned at the Palms

…another demonstration of Government’s love, says Minister
THE opening ceremony at the Palms Geriatric Home on October 1 that heralded the commencement celebrations for Month of the Elderly, indicated the great honour and esteem in which residents there and senior citizens in general, are held by the Government. On Thursday a concert was held as a further tribute to these elders.
And on Friday, at a ceremony on the grounds of the institution, a newly built facility for recreational activities, and a  minibus for residents use, were commissioned, demonstrating unequivocally the administration’s unswerving devotion to the quality of life that the elderly must enjoy.
Before the address by the Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand, there were brief remarks by the Geriatric Home’s administrator, Govind Singh; the Ministry’s Director of Social Services, Wentworth Tanner; a prayer by a nursing staff, Janice Allen; and, of course, a song by  well-known resident Mr. John, requested by the Minister.
Speaking before an appreciative gathering that included the Home’s residents, care staff, and some sections of the media, Minister Manickchand expressed delight at being able to fulfill the pledge of the facility for the resident’s relaxation when declaring open the month’s observances, almost four weeks ago. Explaining that the giving of the building to the residents is another extension of the service that her ministry, on behalf of the government, has done, she advised that the structure must not just be seen as a building, but as a place where the inmates can be informed, can exercise and be healthy.
She emphasised that efforts are made daily to continue to improve their lives so that they can enjoy their golden years, and that the administration considers it a privilege and a duty to continue to administer care to the Home’s residents.
Continuing, she outlined that the minibus is for taking inmates on trips, outings and for medical care.
Then there was the cutting of the ribbon at the northern entrance of the facility, done by a resident, Mr. Chung, in the presence of the Minister, and officials. There was also the receiving of the keys to the minibus by the administrator.
After these ceremonies, a guided tour of the interior of the building was given by the administrator, displaying a gym, a canteen, and library facilities. The canteen area has already been provided with a 52 inch flat screen television, compliments of the United States Embassy, and there are some books on the library’s shelves.
The administrator said that the Home would be grateful for any donation of books.    (GINA)
