Weather watch warning issued

– environmental conditions favourable for tropical storm in Guyana
A weather watch warning was issued early yesterday by the Hydrometeorological Service’s National Weather Watch Centre of an approaching tropical storm that has an 80% chance of developing into a strong tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.
The strong tropical wave is located about 360 miles east-southeast of the southern Windward Islands.

A Ministry of Agriculture release stated that information from the National Hurricane Centre located in Miami, Florida, suggests that environmental conditions are favourable for a tropical depression or a tropical storm to form during the next 24-72 hours.
According to the release, “As this disturbance moves west, north-westward, it is expected to bring periods of heavy rainfall, outbursts of thunder and lightning and strong gusty wind over Guyana, especially in the northern most part of Guyana.”
According to hydrometeorological reports, there is expected increase wave energy; hence sea conditions may become rough with swells that can affect ocean going vessels.
In addition, atmospheric turbulence may affect air navigation. As a result, pilots, users of ocean going vessels (including fishermen) and residents in low lying areas are advised to take precautionary measures.
The situation will be monitored by the National Hydrometeorological Service and updates will be issued. (GINA)
