Inquest recommended into Mahaicony fatal plunge death

THE Police announced, Tuesday night, that investigations into the death of Godwin Maxwell, who jumped into the Mahaicony River on Monday, August 30, to escape from custody after appearing in Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court, have been completed.
A release said a file on the matter was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice and an inquest has been recommended.
The release said necessary documents are being processed to be forwarded to the Coroner.
Maxwell, 31, of Calcutta, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, took the fatal plunge after escaping while awaiting bail at Mahaicony Police Station.
Surety had been set for him, by Magistrate Haymant Ramdhani, before whom he had appeared on tax evasion charges.
Eyewitnesses said Maxwell, who was not placed in the lock-ups to await the posting of the bail by his relatives, ran out of the station and headed towards the old Mahaicony Bridge from where he plunged into the water with a Police rank in hot pursuit.
The policeman fired a gunshot but did not hit Maxwell, whose bloated corpse was retrieved from Mahaicony River a few days later.
