COURTLAND, Corentyne villager Ulric Benjamin was yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment for trafficking 59 grammes of cannabis (marijuana). He was also fined $10,000, with the alternative of an additional six months in prison, by Magistrate Taijnarine Ramroop at Albion Court in Corentyne, Berbice.
The 49-year-old father of four had, initially, denied the charge when it was first read to him last January 18 but on his second appearance, after spending eight months as a remanded prisoner, Benjamin changed his plea to guilty.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said cops, acting on information received, went to the convict’s house and found a plastic bag containing leaves, seeds and stems of the plant in the living room.
Asked, by the Court, what he had to say, Benjamin replied: “Sir, I am sorry.”
