Tourism Minister assures GMR&SC of support to promote international race meet

THE tourism ministry will give its full support and will assist in the promotion of the international race of Champions, which is slated for November 7 at the South Dakota circuit with top racers clashing from the United States, Canada, Barbados, Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago among others. Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad, on Wednesday, met with Vice President of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC), Mahendra Boodhoo along with driver Mark Vieira to discuss the upcoming race meeting and gave the ministry’s commitment to promote the event.
Minister Prashad noted that the Caribbean and International Race of Champions is already on his ministry’s and the Guyana Tourism Authority’s calendar of events for 2010.
Boodhoo said the club is looking to host the event in collaboration with the Ministries of Tourism and Sport, and in an effort to market the event sought the ministry’s assistance in promoting the event.
He said this year’s event is expected to be bigger and better, attracting a huge overseas crowd, since for the first time in the history of motor racing in the Caribbean, Guyana is leading the points standing.
The GMR&SC is looking at staging a parade two Sundays before the big meeting for Guyanese to get a glimpse of the sponsors, racing cars, and drivers, from Vlissengen Road (seawall) to University of Guyana Road, Turkeyen.
They are also desirous of promoting motor racing at GuyExpo slated for September 30 to October 5, at the National Exhibition Site under the theme “Expanding Investment in a Sustainable Environment”. (GINA)
