THE first Day of Interaction organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/National Sports Commission is scheduled for Port Mourant, Corentyne this Sunday. An anticipated 1 000 athletes from Democratic Councils and three Municipalities will take to the Port Mourant Community Centre ground to compete in a number of sport disciplines, including softball cricket, football, table tennis, volleyball, dominoes, circle tennis, chess and draughts.
There will be two specially organised track and field events (800m and 1500m) for men and women. Port Mourant ground is known for our outstanding cricketers such as Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Alvin Kallicharran, Joe Solomon and the Nagamootoo brothers among others.
The day’s activities will commence with a March Past by athletes and officials. Brief remarks will be made by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony, Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Regional Chairman Region Six Zulfikar Mustapha, and other regional and political officials.
Special prizes will be awarded for the largest contingent, best banner, and best uniform group.
There will be an educational exhibition and a medical team throughout the day.
The Day of Interaction is expected to be alcohol-free. There will be no selling/consumption of alcohol during the activities at the venue.
At the completion of the activities, trophies will be awarded to the winners and runners-up.
To encourage the further development of sports, gear and equipment will be presented to individuals, communities and schools.
The theme of the Day of Interaction is ‘Sports for Combating HIV/AIDS and bringing awareness against violence, crime and drugs’.
Some of the best Sport Personalities in Berbice will be present.
Special efforts will be made to establish two volleyball courts at the No.63 Beach.
