ADDITIONAL food supplies are being sent to flood affected locations in the Pakaraimas following reports of shortages and loss of agricultural production, Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon announced last Friday.
He told his weekly media briefing: “Cabinet was advised of the threat to food security being increased in these communities and Minister [of Amerindian Affairs Pauline] Sukhai updated Cabinet on those recent developments, particularly in the North and South Pakaraimas.”
According to Luncheon, Sukhai informed Cabinet that flood waters had not receded and crops had been destroyed and that her ministry and the Ministries of Local Government and Agriculture are, currently, collaborating on the preparation and submission of more interventions to mitigate the impact in those communities.
The HPS said Cabinet noted that the abnormal weather pattern persists and rainfall continued unabated in the affected hinterland regions and that seasonal rainfall and flooding have evolved into prolonged inundation of those communities.
Luncheon said Minister Sukhai told Cabinet that food supplies have already been dispatched to some of the communities, particularly Paramakatoi and Kato and that, early this week, other foodstuff will also be delivered to other areas in the Pakaraimas.
